Independence Day

Independence day in the USA and in Catalonia

Similarities:
- They make a festival for their countries.
- This event is the most important event in the countries.
- People celebrate it with flags and national songs.

Differences:
- The American festival is celebrated on the day that the Declaration of Independence was signed, but in Catalonia they celebrated the defeat in "La Guerra dels Segadors".
- The day is not the same.
- We don't do the same activities.

Christmas Day

CHRISTMAS DAY IN ENGLAND AND IN CATALUNYA

SIMILARITIES:
- People receive presents everywhere.
- It's celebrated on the same day.
- We decorate a Christmas tree.

DIFFERENCES:
- We don't have the Christmas crackers.
- In Catalunya there's a tradition called "cagar el tió"and in England they wait for Santa Claus.
- A lot of people here have lunch with families and in England they have a dinner. 

St. Patrick's day

Saint Patrick's day or Sant Jordi

SIMILARITIES
- Both are well-known festivals.
- Both are celebrated in spring.
- Both are devoted to a saint.

DIFFERENCES
- The two festivals are on different days.
- Sant Patrick's day is from  Ireland and Sant Jordi is from Catalonia.
- In Catalonia, Sant Jordi is the day of lovers and in Ireland, Sant Patrick's day is a national holiday.

New Year's Eve

In Catalunya we celebbrate the New Year’s Eve, but it isn’t the same.

SIMILARITIES:
- We drink champagne.
- It's the same day.
- We eat nougats and chocolate.

DIFFERENCES:
- We don’t have a lot of fireworks
 -In Catalonia we eat grapes according with the bells.

Easter

EASTER IN ENGLAND OR EASTER IN CATALONIA

SIMILARITIES:
- It is a Christian festival.
- It is a holiday time.
- It's celebrated on the same day. 

DIFFERENCES:
- They eat simnel cake and we eat a special cake called mona.
- They celebrate Easter Egg Hunt and we put an chocolate egg on the cake.

Carnival in Venice

Carnival in Venice or in Solsona

SIMILARITIES:
- We dress up.
- We wear make up.
- We organise a parade.

DIFFERENCES:
- In Solsona people move in floats and in Venice they move in Gondolas.
- In Venice people wear masks and in Solsona people use make up to decorate their faces.
-The disguises in Venice are very elegant and worked, but in Solsona some of them are bought in the Internet.

Similarities:
- Both festivals are the same day.
- This are celebrated in a similar way.

Differences:
- In Halloween parties people don't eat chestnuts.
- Halloween is scary.
- On Halloween children wear costumes.

THANKSGIVING DAY (IN USA)

THANKSGIVING DAY OR TOTS SANTS

SIMILARITIES:

- They are celebrated in November.

DIFFERENCES:

- The celebration of All Saints' Day is dedicated to the memory of ancestors.
- All Saints' Day is related to the day of the dead people.
- It was originated before Christ.

Carnival Rio de janeiro

CARNIVAL IN RIO DE JANEIRO OR CARNIVAL IN SOLSONA

SIMILARITIES:
- It's a festival.
- There are parades with floats in both festivals.
- People wear costumes.

DIFFERENCES
- The carnival in Rio is very big.
- In Solsona there are giants (special tradition from Catalunya)
- In the Rio carnival people dance samba.

SAINT VALENTINE'S DAY

SAINT VALENTINE'S DAY OR SANT JORDI

SIMILARITIES:
- Boyfriends and girlfriends give presents to his/her partner.
- The boy gives a flower to the girl, usually a rose.
- It's the day of love.

DIFFERENCES:
- Saint Valentine's day is celebrated on 14th February, and Sant Jordi is celebrated on 23rd April.
- The girl, on Sant Jordi, gives a book to the boy, and on Saint Valentine's day the girl gives a box of chocolates or a rose to the boy.
- Sant Jordi is the day of literature, but Saint Valentine's day is only the day of love.
